What are journalistic ethics

Play this ethics game.

What have you learned from the various scenarios?

66 comments:

  1. Journalistic ethics are the credibility and the decisions of a journalist. The decisions of journalists can effect their lives and they need to make wise decisions for 1. The benefit of them 2.The benefit of the source and 3.The benefit of the newspaper.

    1. like in scenario 5, you shouldn't pit yourself as a journalist in a position that can mess up your career or your family life. you need to do whats best for the newspaper but also what's best for yourself.

  2. Well in the scenario where the reporter had to decided whether or not to post a very graphic photo, i believed that they should have asked the families if they could publish the photo. They might give permission or maybe not.

  3. I have learned that journalists will go to the extreme to get the story they want. They are willing to annoy the public, fight with the power, and hurt the citizens. Scenario number 2 i think caught my attention the most because it had my ask myself, would a reporter do something this graphic and hurt the families just to get the publicity they want? I would have not published the photo because it can be disturbing to other people who may have known these poor people. However, if you want something that bad, then you are willing to hurt a few feelings.

  4. I have learned that being a reporter you will have many conflicting troubles, and that it's a very difficult job, that sometimes neither decisions you make are the right one(or feel right). You have difficult situations that you would either benefit for your job or not or have people despise you or not. As the first question I answered really conflicted me and both answers felt wrong because one was sympathetic and the other was just for the job.

  5. I have learned that being a reporter is one of the hardest things when it comes to decision making. I realized that there is a huge difference in hearing/saying a three words when it comes to interviews you must hear when the words are presented. Besides, I learned that it is important to cover stories however, if you are connected with the person that your editor wants an article about you must tell them about your connection and ask to be excluded from doing the story. Lastly, I learned that although graphic pictures may be disturbing and hurtful to the family of those graphic pictures, it is vital to show graphic photos that illustrates how drunk driving may affect others.

  6. -In One Of The Scenario The Reporter Had Took Bloody Pictures Of a Bad Crash Without Asking or his/her Parents About The Scene.

  7. From the various scenarios, I learned how many difficult ethical decisions reporters have to make on a regular basis. Also, because everyone has different opinions on certain things, it is even harder with the ethical issues because if the situation had happened to someone else, they would have handled it differently.

    1. Specifically, I wasn't sure what to do for the last scenario. I thought it would be okay to accept free gifts, but in a way, they can be a form of a bribe. At that point, it would be better to not accept any free gifts.

  8. I learned to think about the situation from all sides and to consider the consequences of what i'll publish. But as a journalist, i would do whatever to publish a good story. Scenario 6: I chose to summarize the source's quote and stick with my story. The source would've gotten angry if i published a quote that he didn't say. Summarizing what he said was the best option.

  9. Journalistic ethics is pretty much the decisions that you have to make while being a journalist. Every decision a journalist makes must be well thought out because it affects not only their own life, but the lives of others. Such as the scenario of the photo with the dead bodies. Either he put up the photo of the bodies and harm the feeling of the family of the two boys that got killed in a car crash or put a boring photo that most of the people that read your news paper by pass the story or even the paper all together.

    ReplyDelete
  10. In scenario 2, I wouldn't have printed the graphic picture because those bodies had families and the family wouldn't have wanted to see their child, dead and covered in blood. Even if I were given permission by the families to print the pictures I still wouldn't print them. I feel it's not right.

  11. journalistic ethics are the decisions and conches of journalist. there where many examples of this in the scenarios. for example the use of the words "off the books can be used very literally. when the police officers in the precinct gave the reporter information he asked for it to be off the books after he had already said it . after something like this a journalist has to decide weather or not to use the info against the source or respect their wishes

  12. Controversial Images : I thought even though the family may go through a hard time dealing with the death of a family member I think people should still see the photo . It may help others become aware of what could happen to them instead of seeing cases from years before . If the family is pissed off at you tell them and hope for mercy ( if they give you any!)

  13. I have learned that ethics is a big part of todays journalistic world with all the new journalistic laws of the land.

  14. A lot of the choices that journalists make may seem like they benefit only them, but i've noticed that a lot of the choices journalists make end up helping more people then just themselves in the end. While some journalists may not care if their decisions only help them, others see it as their job as a journalist to help others and make beneficial choices.

  15. I have learned that a reporters journalistic integrity and morales can affect the outcome of his or her story immensely for better or worse.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I've learned that being a journalist is hard work and very challenging. They make mistakes and huge choices that could easily hurt their career. Ethics play a major role in a journalist's life.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I have learned that it's really not easy to be a journalist, either way you're going to be criticized. Also as a reporter your notes have to be clear and understandable. As a reporter you have to be very cautious about the photos and articles you publish.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I learned that the choices that you make as a reporter are not always easy and some choices can cause a lot of of problems but that you have to be ready for it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I learned that most journalist care more for the story instead of certain peoples concerns and feelings. This can effect a journalist in different ways, for example: a journal can lose their most important sources and can lose permission to publish a story.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I've learned that being a journalist truly means hard work and dedication. No matter what, your job comes first. before the opinions of others and before there emotions. But i do believe in scenario 2 the reporter should have asked the family for permission of publication, or at least let them the family know they were going to publish the picture before hand.

  21. There are two kind of journalistic ethics: do whats right for the people, or do what will benefit you. Journalists have chose between theses to and face the consequences either way. I think journalists should always do what will benefit them, because eventually, it'll benefit their readers.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I learned that there are no right or wrong answer and that every decision you make can harm one, but help more. Its not easy being a journalist because there will be many hard decisions to make.

    ReplyDelete
  23. There are many types of journalistic ethics, but the two most important ones were the positive and negative ones. The positive ones benefited the people who had published their stories, but the negative ones were disadvantages to those who didn't want to be revealed.

  24. These scenarios show how much work a journalist really does. Not everyone really knows the seriousness of finding a source for a story.

  25. Niklas- I learned that journalist have to make many decisions that has to be right or wrong in their own mind

    ReplyDelete
  26. I couldn't understand it I realized that lots of times whatever you write down may be wrong !

    ReplyDelete
  27. I learned that being a Journalist leads to more then Decision making or what people think of you. I learned its a choice of you acknowledging the outcome of what your decision is. Weather its for the better or the worst its your job and you have to do it. From Scenario 5 I learned that I would've done choice B because I feel that you shouldn't have wrote the story about him if you didn't have enough facts.

    ReplyDelete
  28. i learned that being a journalist means you have major decisions to make and theres always stress guilt and sometimes regret. but you have to back everything up. you have to go through right and wrong and some extreme sights

    1. also for like senario 2 with the two teenagers she had a hard desicsion with posting the photos with out permission for her journalist purposes

  29. I learned that it is not that easy being a journalism and that you have to make hard decisions sometimes

    ReplyDelete
  30. I learned that being a journalist, your decisions can affect not only your life, but other people's as well. For example, in scenario 9, the father had to either write the story or give up his job. People are so used to bashing against journalists when in fact, they have it hard too.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I learned that the choices that you make as a reporter aren't always easy and some choices can cause a lot of of problems for yourself and or others but you should be ready for any tasks that comes towards you . i believes in scenario 2 that if the reporter where in the situation of being interviewed and didn't give permission to publication it he would of been mad so i think he should of ask permission to publication it . Basically either way you chose theres is always a negative and positive comment !! :)

  32. What I learn from this game is the different type of scenarios that journalist have to face like in Controversial Images or Presenting Both Sides. In each situation, it shows how you can deal with each problem with a solution. Now I know how to face each problem with getting to a....trouble

  33. I've learned that jornalist have to make a lot of decisions and they have consequnces for your action I think that been a jornalist is hard

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ive learned that being a journalist includes consequences from either the paper/boss or the people (citizens) that you interview.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Journalistic ethics are simply the decisions of the journalist. Ive learned that being a journalist comes with many choices as well as consequences.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I learned that from being a journalist, there are many choices in life that you have to make; they could either be good, or bad. Mentioned in Scenario 4, with anonymous sources, you have the option to display who your source is, or not. Also, in Scenario 6 and 10, with the importance of note-taking and data information, you acquire this, and you can either post the story, or keep it to yourself and not let the public know about it, with permission of course.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I've learned that if you state something thats off the record after making your statement it wont count and the reporter will be able to use this information in the story/article. A lot of the times a journalist will have to deal with several consequences for running some information in a story.

    ReplyDelete
  38. i learned that you need to be fair in every article you do and set up a mutual understand with your sources and the public like with the car crash scenario and how you do one thing and another group gets angry with so you have to sympathize with both sides in order to create a mutual understanding

    ReplyDelete
  39. i learned that if your a journalist you have to either take notes and have evidence if your interviewing someone you have to have a lot of information before you post something up like the scenario 2 because posting up with discussing with other people that might disturb them might become into a bigger situation but journalist must think before doing something that could turn into consequences with other people or many people

    ReplyDelete
  40. I have learned that being a journalist requires a lot of quick decision making and it is necessary to have knowledge of all of the rules in journalism. You also have to trust your instincts. For example, in scenerio 2, you have to be able to trust your instincts when deciding what picture is posted in an article. You need to know what is and is not appropriate, because there will always be some people who are offended, but you have to remember who it is you want to send the message to and focus on them only.

  41. Journalistic ethics is the decisions that you have to make while being a journalist. Every single decision a journalist makes has to be well thought out because it affects not only their own life, but the lives of other people too. The scenario of the photo with the dead bodies. Either he put up the photo of the bodies and hurt the feeling of the family of the two boys that got killed in a car crash or put a boring photo that most of the people that read your news paper bypass the story and or even the paper all together.

    ReplyDelete
  42. What I learned from these various scenarios is that when it comes to a journalist making an ethical decision, it is sometimes really hard to do. The reporters are under pressure on whether or not the decision they are presented with are ethical choices they could choose from. In scenario#1, you can see that the reporter has to make a ethic decision on whether or not to tell the people on what could be happening to their community. In another scenario where the boy's reputation might be besmirched, is a case where not everyone would know how to deal with it. To make an ethic decision, you have to either trust your instincts or follow the crowd.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Many fail to recognize the importance of journalistic ethics. People unfamiliar with journalism don't have a complete understanding of how some rules in journalism work and how a journalist must use ethics in order to follow the rules of journalism. After playing the ethics game, I learned that before beginning an interview, its imperative that a journalist sets the ground rules to the person they are interviewing. In the first situation presented in the ethics game, it stressed the need to define what "off the record" and "on the record" meant because your source should always have a complete understanding of the journalistic rules before revealing their information in an interview.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I have leanred that journalist ethics are a part of being the journalist you are. But people are not know why that journalism's work does not have to base on the ethics you are. It depends on the topic or case your working on and whether you oppose to it or not.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I have learned that some journalists are willing to go to the extreme to get the story they want. They are willing to hurt the public, fight with the power, and hurt the people in the city they live in.For example in example number 3, the physician could be a really good physician and yes he might be giving out medicines without a license but maybe the medicine could've really helped the sick person, it could've even saved that persons life. And by putting him in jail u just wont do bad to him you'll do bad to his family and all the people that go to him on a daily bases.

  46. I have learned the journalist are very stubborn and hardworking people.I say this because it seems as if some journalist may publish anything that they may seem is "successful" without thinking before acting.I also learned that being a journalist is very over-whelming, for the simple fact that everyone is looking at you if anything goes left.I have also learned that journalist also make assumptions, and that they aren't so "perfect" in getting the inside scoop. In Scenario 6, I've learned that you'll have to pay close attention when others are speaking, and make sure you are on point when writing a article. Most importantly I've learned that being a journalist I'd have to make descions wisely because anything can go sour at any given moment.
